Agatha Hall — The Inspiration

Lynda “Agatha” Brown was born April 4th, 1910 in Joe Hut, a district of Trelawny parish in Jamaica, West Indies. She lived in the community her entire life and served roles of daughter, wife, mother, pastor, mentor and community leader until her death on August 12th, 2000. She was married at a young age to Eric Hall. Together they produced ten children. Most youth in the region knew her as Mother. As her own biological children would attest, even with little income, she never spared food or housing for a child in need.

Adopting her middle name, Agatha was a very influential Christian leader both in the Joe Hut community and surrounding districts. She was pivotal in getting the Mission house started and functional providing fellowship there for over seventy years. It was a place where missionary groups would come to preach God’s word. She was also a lay preacher at the Head Baptist church in the nearby Litchfield district. Being successful in a marriage that lasted over seventy years, she was highly sought by young couples for spiritual guidance and counseling.

Agatha remained devoted to her community in Joe Hut. She passed on great opportunities to travel abroad to remain to spread the word of God within her own neighborhood. Her legacy now continues at the old “Mission house” as the Agatha H. Christian Cultural Center.
